Three named to academic football team

BATON ROUGE – West St. John’s Carl Gauthier, Riverside’s Blake Luminais andSt. James’ Jeremy Waguespack were among 77 student-athletes fromacross the state to be selected to the Louisiana High Athletic Association Composite Academic All-State Football team.
The composite All-State team is made up of players who scored the highest in their respective sport and division/Class. Gauthier, the quarterback forthe Rams, was selected after achieving a 3.9000 grade point average.Luminais, a wide receiver, compiled a 3.9545 GPA in his career with theRebels. Waguespack, an offensive guard, had a 3.9523 GPA. Members of the composite squad will receive special recognition at the 2000 LHSAA-LHSCA Hall of Fame Banquet and induction ceremonies scheduled for tonight at The Convention Center of the Radisson Hotel in Baton Rouge beginning at 6:30 p.m.To qualify for an All-Academic, All-State team, a student-athlete must have achieved a three-year cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better and must have beenselected for at least one all-District honor. Additionally, each member schoolprincipal is afforded the opportunity of nominating at least two academically deserving individuals who did not receive all-District honors. This year, 569student-athletes received recognition in football.
Along with Waguespack, three Lutcher Bulldogs and two St. Charles CatholicComets were named to the Class 3A All-State offensive team. Lutchertackles Bryce Guidry (3.7857 GPA)) and Dustin Jenkins (3.4286) were namedas well as Bulldogs’ wide receiver Ricky Reed (3.2619). St. Charles Catholichad wide receiver Kip Verbeek (3.2720) and quarterback Nicholas Monica(3.2380) named to the team. On the defensive side of the ball, St. James end Ron Becnel was named with a3.5238 GPA. Also named was St. Charles Catholic’s James Cupit with a3.5000 GPA.St. Charles Catholic placed three and Lutcher and St. James had two each onthe honorable mention teams. St. James offensive tackle Clint Becnel wasnamed on offense with a 3.0465 GPA. while teammate Jereal Dillon, adefensive back, was named on defense with a 3.1163 GPA. Lutcher guardsClark Martin (3.4884) and Matthew DeRoche (3.3810) were also named onoffense. On defense, St. Charles Catholic had linebackers Adam Gros(3.2380) and John Mitchell (3.000) as well as defensive back Kurt Biven(3.2333) named.Gauthier and Luminais were joined on the Class 2A All-State offense by Riverside’s David Bugner and Joseph Trosclair. Bugner, a guard, achieved a3.3846 GPA, while Trosclair, a tackle, had a 3.6704 GPA. On defense, WestSt. John end Tremaine Nathan was selected to the team with a 3.7142 GPA.Riverside defensive back Jay Bailey was named to the honorable mention team on defense with a 3.3333 GPA. East St. John placed three members on the Class 5A honorable mentionteam. Center William Brignac was named after achieving a 3.6000 GPA.Tackle Ernest Ricks achieved a 3.0000 GPA while kicker Billy Hogan had a3.2093 GPA.
