RICHARD SIGNS WITH ULM – Destrehan all-State lineman Damien Richard committed to Louisiana-Monroe this week.
Richard was named the District 7-5A defensive MVP after helping the Wildcats to a fourth-straight district title in 1999. The 6-0, 175 seniorrecorded 82 tackles, 73 solo. He had eight tackles for 63 yards in lossesand 16 other tackles behind the line for 53 yards in losses. He also hadthree pass breakups, caused two fumbles and recovered two.
Richard becomes the second Wildcat and fourth River Parishes player to commit this year, joining teammate Jeremy Parquet (Southern Mississippi), Lutcher’s Jerron Wishom (Louisiana Tech) and West St. John’sDonriel Louis (LSU).
MEALEY HEADING TO ANOTHER ALL-STAR GAME – Former Destrehan and LSU running back Rondell Mealey has been selected to play in the 51st annual Senior Bowl today in Mobile, Ala.
Mealey is a late addition, replacing Texas Tech running back Sammy Morris, who has a shoulder injury. Mealey will play for the South team inthe game that will be televised by TBS at 1:30 p.m.Mealey, who gained 637 yards on 170 carries this past season, had played in the Blue-Gray Bowl on Christmas Day and in the East-West Shrine Bowl last week.
