St. James Council acts on variety of issues

CONVENT – The St. James Council took the following actions Wednesday: Sandra Folse was honored with a plaque following her recent retirement from parish government. Folse had worked with the utilities departmentfor 31 years.

Representatives from Postlethwaite & Netterville were on hand to present their audit report of the parishes 1999 financial standings.

Overall they had found that the parish was in good standings though it is more dependent on the support of industries in its ad valorem taxes than the surrounding parishes.

The council accepted the bid of $38,476 from Capital Buick of Baton Rouge for the purchase of a 2000 heavy duty dump truck.

A resolution was passed in support of St. John Parish’s effort to build aWar Veteran’s home. Currently St. Bernard Parish is the proposed site forthe home.

Four ordinances were introduced for discussion at the public hearing before the June 5 council meeting in Convent. Ordinance 00-11 allows fortwo lots on Louisiana Highway 3125 in Lutcher to be reclassified for limited commercial use. Sonny Detillier filed for the reclassification inorder to build an insurance company on the lots. Ordinance 00-12introduces setting and designating the property millage rates in excess of the adjusted property tax millage rates for the year 200 levied on all taxable property within the parish. Ordinance 00-13 adopts ordinance 00-12. Ordinance 00-14 again establish rules regulations and fees for the useof the St. James Parish Recreation Parks.The public meeting will be held at 6:30 in the council room.
