Lutcher, SCC place five on softball all-State team

BATON ROUGE – Lutcher and St. Charles Catholic combined to place fiveplayers on the Louisiana Sportswriters Association’s Class 3A all-State softball honorable mention team.
Named were Michelle Roussel and Carlie Humphries of Lutcher and Courtney Vicknair, Jessie Zeringue and Marci Martin of St. Charles Catholic.Humphries, a freshman, helped lead the Lady Bulldogs to the District 9-3A title and the state semifinals in 2000. The first-team all-District 9-3Aselection went 18-6 with a 1.73 earned run average and 130 strikeouts in146 innings.
Roussel, a junior shortstop, batted .319 with two home runs, four triples,seven doubles and 25 RBIs in being named to the first-team all-District 9-3A team.
Zeringue, the District 9-3A MVP, batted .345 with 22 RBIs and a .529slugging percentage in 2000. The senior catcher recently signed with ChipolaCollege.
Vicknair, a senior infielder, was named to the first-team all-District 9-3A team after batting .361 with 23 RBIs and five stolen bases.Martin, a senior pitcher, was an all-District 9-3A first team selection after going 18-5 with a .61 ERA and 130 strikeouts. She also batted .423 with 17RBIs and a .641 slugging percentage.Teurlings Catholic freshman pitcher Beth Provost was selected as the Class 3A MVP. Provost went 26-3 with a .64 ERA and 207 strikeouts in 196 2/3innings.
Her coach, Kim Hebert, was named the Coach of the Year after leading Teurlings to the Class 3A state title with a 35-4 record.
Joining Provost on the first-team all-State pitching staff were Brusly’s Emily Stelly, Grant’s Ellie Collins and Kaplan’s Lauren Trahan. Infielders wereBerwick’s Mark Skiles, Mansfield’s Ursula Maroski and Jessica Choate, Teurlings’ Lauren Delahoussaye and Berwick’s Stevie Gray.
In the outfield are Notre Dame’s Leah Smith and Gretchen Schmaltz and Jena’s Sara Townsend. Utility players were Parkview’s Crista Miller, Albany’sMichaela Roberts, Notre Dame’s Margaret Zaunbrecher and Teurlings’ Courtney Boudreaux.
