BOUTTE – Dragonflies were swarming around the Hahnville field Monday afternoon.

For the Riverside Extra Inning Club, there was another bug going around – the hitting bug.

The Rebels banged out 15 hits in five innings on their way to an 18-2 victory over Otto Candies in Second District play.

The victory improved the Extra Inning Club to 4-1 overall and 3-1 in district while Otto Candies fell to 3-2.

“We just kept on hitting,” Extra Inning Club coach Davey Clement said. “All Iknow is that we have been working our tails off in practice. We hit every dayin the cage or on the field. Hopefully, we can continue to come around.”The Extra Inning Club started the barrage in the top of the first against Otto candies starter Matt Caire. Bradley Hodges led off the game with a double toright field and scored an out later on Sean Delaneuville’s single to left.

Delaneuville came around three batters later on Damian Melancon’s single to right, giving the Rebels a 2-0 lead.

That lead grew to 5-0 in the third. Delaneuville led off with a walk and BrittWaguespack followed with a run-scoring double to left. Brandon Delaneuvillereached as Caire bobbled his bunt attempt, sending Waguespack to third.

Melancon then flew out to deep center, plating Waguespack for a 4-0 lead.

Delaneuville, who had stolen second and third, scored on Blake Duhe’s two-out single to left.

The Extra Inning Club broke the game open in the fourth, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs. Otto Candies reliever Denis Lanouxwalked Seth Johnson and Scott Poirrier and hit Hodges with a pitch to load the bases. Jarred Farrell came in with Sean Delaneuville driving in two runswith a ground-rule double to center.

Waguespack beat out a bunt as Poirrier scored to make it 8-0. Two outslater, Derrick Louque struck out but reached on a wild pitch as Delaneuville crossed the plate. After Duhe walked to load the bases, Johnson clearedthem with a home run over the left field fence, giving the Rebels a 13-0 lead.

Meantime, Louque was facing the minimum over the first three innings.

Louque walked three but picked two off first and had another caught stealing. He opened the fourth by issuing a walk to Lee Tregre. Two outslater, Matt Caire got Otto Candies on the scoreboard with a home run to right field, cutting the deficit to 13-2.

The Extra Inning Club added five more runs in the fifth. Singles by SeanDelaneuville and Brandon Delaneuville and a walk by Waguespack loaded the bases with none out. Singles by Melancon and Duhe plated two runs. Twomore scored as Ryan Bugay reached on an error and Fortenberry drove in another with a single to left.

Louque gave up singles to Ryan Burke and Tregre in the fifth before striking out Dustin Roussell to end the game. Louque finished with five walks andthree hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

“They found a hole over there and wore it out,” Otto Candies coach Mark Sims said, pointing to left field. “They did what they had to do. They hit theball and put it into play.”
