LUTCHER – Lutcher High School student Lacey Millet is a model student.
“She models what we want our students to be,” said Lutcher High School counselor Brenda Mitchell.
Perhaps her name sounds familiar to you. It could be from Lutcher varsitysports – volleyball, swim team, cross country, track or tennis. Perhaps it’sfrom the last two international science fairs in Philadelphia and Detroit or the National Youth Leadership on Medicine in Houston. Perhaps it’s from thescience, math, Spanish or Beta clubs at Lutcher High.
No? Well then you must have read her work in the Lutcher High Cypress Stump newspaper or her column in the Times Picayune, where she’s their teen reporter.
And if it’s none of these, perhaps it’s just due to her cheerful and energetic attitude. She gets along with everybody, said Mitchell. Daughter of Craig and Cindy Millet, Lacey lives with her parents and two brothers, Brad and Adam, in Lutcher. She said her parents used to worryabout her doing too much, but “after three years of this my parents don’t worry to much.””I like to keep busy. I’ve got a lot of energy and enjoy everything I do,”explained Millet.
Not only is she “well involved in everything,” said Mitchell, but she’s also a 4.0 student. That will help when she applies to college next year to pursue apre-medicine degree.
At the conference in Houston she was able to attend a heart surgery in an observation room. Afterwards the students were able to talk to heartsurgeons and other doctors. That focused her goals.”I’ve always wanted to be in the health field, but after the National Youth Leadership on Medicine conference, I want to be a heart surgeon,” said Millet.
She’s looking for a small school to attend next fall.
“I don’t want to get lost in the crowd,” said Millet. At a smaller school, shefeels she may get a better college experience and continue to participate in many activities.
Doing so much in school, traveling and seeing other places and cultures “gives me a wider view,” Millet said.
Also at a small school she hopes to continue swimming, which she does year round between the Lutcher High swim team and Crawfish Aquatics, a competitive training center in Baton Rouge, Where this drive comes from Millet is unsure, but knows it’s fueled by her family.
“My friends and relatives keep encouraging me,” said Millet.
With their support and her motivation, it’s hard to know where Millet will end up. Certainly though, the River Parishes will see her name again and often, whether it’s for a breakthrough in the medical field or medals won in competition.
With whatever she does, Lutcher High School, the Lutcher community and the Millets are certain to be proud of their model individual.
