Locals among preseason picks

LAPLACE – The preseason football honors are out and River Parishes athletes are well represented on a number of teams.

Louisiana Football Magazine lists its All-Louisiana High School Team in its summer issue and a number of local athletes have made its Best of the Rest squad. At quarterback are Lutcher’s Risley St. Germain and Hahnville’sDawan Landry.

St. James’ Montrell Steib and East St. John’s Chuckie Burl are among 53running backs named. And Lutcher’s William Adams makes the team atfullback.

Among the 45 tight ends named are St. James’ Davin Dennis and JustinAubert and East St. John’s Darwin Pittman and Louis Gardner. Dennis also made the team at wide receiver as did the Hahnville duo of Corey Woods and Aaron Alexander. On the offensive line are Hahnville’s Dale Liretteand Clint Loupe and Riverside’s Jason Blanchard.

The defensive side of the ball sees St. James’ Shane Kliebert, West St.John’s Coy Miller, Hahnville’s Lloyd Brimmer and Al Fiffie and Lutcher’s Lowell Jackson and Courtney Long named on the defensive line.

At linebacker are Hahnville’s Jason Naquin, East St. John’s Rashad Williamsand Destrehan’s Lekeith Robinson. And in the defensive backfield are EastSt. John’s Mervin Williams and Jonathan Miles and Lutcher’s David Pittmanand James Williams.

Hahnville’s Matt Cummins is one of 14 kickers named to the team.

The magazine also named Tulane junior punter Casey Roussel, a St. CharlesCatholic graduate, to its Preseason All-College team.

Roussel is also a first-team All-Conference USA selection by The Sporting News in its preseason magazine. Tulane junior offensive tackle Corey Sewell,an East St. John grad, also made the first team. Another Wildcat graduate,Southern Mississippi senior defensive tackle DeQuincy Scott, was a second- team selection.

The publication has named Miami junior defensive back Edward Reed, a Destrehan High alum, to its preseason All-Big East Conference first team at safety. Georgia Tech sophomore defensive end Greg Gathers, an East St.John grad, is a second-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection at end.

The Southland Football League has also released its preseason all-conference teams. Northwestern State’s T.J. Sutherland, an East St. John alum, was asecond-team selection at wide receiver.
