BOUTTE – A year ago, Hahnville had one of the best offenses in the area but often had trouble putting teams away late.
The Tigers want to remedy that problem in 2000 and one of the main focuses for doing so is on the rushing attack.
Hahnville got off to a good start with that goal in a 12-0 victory over Lutcher in the River Parishes Jamboree. The Tigers ran the ball 32 times, gaining 227 yards and scoring once. Skyler Boyle led the way with 87yards on nine carries.
Charles Taylor had another 43 yards on eight attempts. Lionel Evans had24 yards and a touchdown on four attempts. Quarterback Dawan Landryadded another 59 yards on eight carries and also threw for 42 yards and a touchdown.
“All four backs ran the ball pretty hard,” Hahnville coach Lou Valdin said.
“We’re trying to be more balanced than last year. We’re trying hard to runthe football so when we have the lead we know we can put teams away.”The defense held Lutcher to 97 yards, including 14 yards on 13 attempts running the ball. Lutcher quarterback Risley St. Germain passed for 83yards and was intercepted once.
With the rushing attack in full gear for the Tigers, the Bullodgs had just one possession in the second half.
“We got a good total defensive effort,” Valdin said. “I was also pleasedwith the secondary.”Hahnville opens the regular season Friday night at home against Sarah Reed. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Hahnville.Reed, returning 14 starters, is one of the favorites this season in District 9-5A after going 6-5 in 1999 and advancing to the bi-district round. TheOlympians will be big up front, led by seniors Tony Narcisse (6-2, 295) at center and Aaron Jackson (6-6, 320) at tackle.
Senior quarterback Kristopher Whittington leads the offense this year. TheOlympians are running an option attack out of the I-formation in 2000.
Senior running back Joshua Jones is the main weapon out of the backfield and will be joined by senior Justin Bowens. Wideouts are sophomore CarlHurst and junior Anthony White.
On defense, Reed is strong in the secondary with seniors Jamaal Fielder, Shaun Price and James Stalbert and junior Christoper Dupuy.
“They’re big and are very athletic,” Valdin said. “They are big up front andhave great skill players in the secondary.”Hahnville travels to Ponchatoula in week two while Reed goes to South Lafourche.
