The 2000-2001 Wheels for Life bike-a-thon recently held at East St. JohnElementary School for St. Jude Children’s Hospital, for children who haveleukemia, pediatric AIDS, Sickle Cell Anemia and other life-threatening diseases, was a huge success.
The bike-a-thon was coordinated by Diana H. Duhe, 4-H executive leaderand sponsored by the St. John 4-H program.Thirty-seven bicycle riders rode 2,148 laps and raised $1,677.82 for St.Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Riders were Danielle Allen, Coby Allen, Aaron Power, Meaghan Power, Amanda Duhe, Keiondra Frank, Kristen White, Keisha Alexandra, Nolan Noble, Denzel Nobel, Joy Swanson, Danny Cutno, Angie Dufresne, Aimee Dufresne, Rebecca Hassel, Tara Short, Hannah Boudreaux, Matika White, Amanda Cambre, Danielle Jasmin, Vincent Glorioso, Ashley Wilking, Kyle Wilking, Justin Vicknair, Chris Becnel, Kara Keller, Edward Polk II, Trey Putman, Kristen Roussel, Brandi Bardell, Nicholas Foster, Meg Foster, Darleen Lee, Stasha Thomas, Bradley Perkins, Antoine Guillory and Jenna Trosclair. Riders represented 4-H School clubs from St. Peter, Riverside,CHEF, Fifth Ward, John L. Ory, Ascension of Our Lord, Our Lady of Grace,and Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet schools.Adult helpers who assisted were Angela Stout, Doris B. Jones, CharlotteShort, Yvonne Perkins, Alfred Cutno, Rhonda Keyes, Judith Dufresne, Netty Ayme, Chad Ayme, Ryan Ayme, Shirley Polk, 4-H agent Melanie Burl and home economist from St. John Cooperative Extension Service in EdgardCathy Holmes.
Receiving first place was Danny Cutno, who rode the most laps – 130.
Second place went to Nolan Noble, who rode 124 laps; and receiving third place was Ashley Wilking, riding 103 laps.
Bringing in the most donations were first place, Edward Polk II, $300; second place, Meaghan Power, $228; and third place, Nicholas Foster, $134.
The 4-H Club bringing in the most donations was Ascension of Our Lord 4- H Club, winning a pizza treat.
The first-place winner bringing in the most money donations was Edward Polk II, who is the winner of the St. Jude Research Hospital prize, ajambox, a T-shirt, sportsbag and certificate. Other riders receiving T-shirts and sportsbag were Meaghan Power, Joy Swanson, Hannah Boudreaux, Danielle Jasmin, Kristen Roussel, Brandi Bardell, Nicholas Foster and Bradley Perkins. Other riders receiving T-shirts were AaronPower, Amanda Duhe, Keiondra Frank, Kristen White, Danny Cutno, Tara Short, Amanda Cambre, Vincent Glorioso, Ashley Wilking, Justin Vicknair, Kara Keller, Trey Putman, Meg Foster and Darleen Lee. All riders andhelpers will receive a participating certificate from St. Jude ResearchHospital and the St. John 4-H Program.Other awards went to Danny Cutno, for the most riding laps, gift certificate to Sicily’s Pizza in LaPlace; Danny Cutno, for the most riding laps; and to Edward Polk II, for bringing in the most money donations.
Bicycles helmets went to Nolan Noble and Ashley Wilking, for second and third places in riding laps, and Meaghan Power and Nicolas Foster for second and third places for bringing in money donations.
Sponsors were Sicily’s Pizza and the Garyville Volunteer Fire Deptartment for refreshments, ice and cups for riders.
“Make a Difference Day” was also held recently with 4-H Clubs collecting food items for the Ministry of Care.
