DHS off to fast start at state

NEW ORLEANS – Destrehan got off to a fast start at the Louisiana HighSchool Athletic Association Division I championships held at the UNOLakefront Arena Pool Friday afternoon.
Both the Destrehan boys and girls teams were fifth after eight events. TheDestrehan girl had 52 points. Dominican was in the lead with 144 points. St.
Joseph’s was second with 115, followed by Mandeville with 74 and Chapellewith 62. Hahnville was 16th with eight points.
In the boys’ competition, Destrehan had 59 points through eight events.
Jesuit was ahead with 159 points, followed by Rummel with 106.5. Mandevillewas in third with 98 and Catholic of Baton Rouge had 82 points to placefourth.
The Destrehan girls opened the meet with a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay, finishing in two minutes, 2.4 seconds. Archbishop Chapellewon the event but was later disqualified. Dominican was awarded first placewith a time of 1:57.41. Hahnville came in fifth place in the consolations and13th overall with a time of 2:12.13.
In the boys’ event, Destrehan was fifth in 1:42.94. Archbishop Rummel wasfirst in an All-American consideration time of 1:38.59. Jesuit also had aconsideration time of 1:39.14.
Destrehan’s Chris Dixon, who finished first in district, was seventh in the200-yard freestyle in 1:49.13. Jesuit’s Nathan Stibrich won in an All-American consideration time of 1:43.59.
The Lady Cats’ Nicole Matherne was sixth in the 200 individual medley with atime of 2:18.42. Sarah Cefalu of Northshore was first in a time of 2:12.90.
Freshman Kevin Braud of Destrehan was eighth in the 200-yard individualmedley with a time of 2:07.93. Mandeville’s Thomas Clavier touched the wallfirst in 1:56.98. Destrehan’s Kevin Walsh was fourth in the consolations and12th overall with a time of 2:10.74.
Destrehan’s Erin Hulsey came on strong to win the consolation heat of the50-yard freestyle in 26.27. St. Joseph’s Casey Honigman touched first in thefinals in 24.72.
Brad Corso, in his first state meet, was sixth in the consolations and 14thoverall in the 50 freestyle in 23.67. Rummel’s Ross Hebert came in first inan All-American consideration time of 21.72. Matherne added a fourth place finish in the 100 butterfly in 1:01.26.
Hahnville’s Carol Bohnsack was seventh in 1:03.31. Hannah Martin of WestMonroe came in first in 59.92.
Hulsey was third in the consolations of the 100 freestyle in 59.23.
