WSJ knocks out Redeemer-Seton

EDGARD – Two Rams butted heads last night, and West St. John knockedRedeemer-Seton down, 56-20.
The game started off with flair, both teams showing what they were capable of. On the first play, Redeemer quarterback Donald Allen threw a long passto Arton Nelson, who finished covering the 84-yard in a dead sprint. The two-point conversion failed, and Redeemer was ahead 6-0 in the first 22 seconds.
West St. John did one better. Devin Herbert caught the kickoff on the 22-yard line and returned the ball all the way back down for an 88-yard touchdown. Derron Thomas ran the two-point conversion over the line,another 14 seconds off the clock.
On Redeemer’s second drive, Herbert again went into action to intercept Allen’s third-and-10 attempt and weave through its offensive line. The driveended on the 47-yard line.
With Redeemer back with the ball, defensive end Lionel Howard stepped in to sack Allen on the first play, but the team went on to score with a quarterback sneak as Allen drove down the last two yards for the score.
Again their two-point conversion failed as West St. John’s defense drugJamal Johnson down just short of the end zone. With 1:21 left on the clock,Redeemer again pulled ahead, 12-8.
West St. John leap-frogged past, 14-12, as Jamailar Mayo caught a pass andbrought the team 53 yards down field to the 4-yard line. Herbert muscledover the line for the score. The two-point conversion failed, making it 14-12with 9:57 left in the second quarter.
A sack and an illegal procedure call on Redeemer left it with 17 yards left to go on a fourth down at the 10-yard line. West St. John capitalized on a weakpunt and took it at the 35 yard line. The drive was given to Herbert and inthree runs he brought it home, 28 yards on the second run, the last 15 on the third. Haven Gaudet put an extra two points on the board and West St.John moved up again, 22-12.
Redeemer quieted down for a while, as West St. John continued to pour it on.With 3:33 left in the second, Darnell Landry made a 17-yard run up the middle for a score, increasing the lead to 28-12.
Redeemer fumbled it return and West St. John recovered at the 27-yard line.Quarterback Randall Nicholson threw the remaining 27 yards to Davin Farnell, who stood wide open at the left corner of the end zone. The touchdown wascalled back, but Mayho made the second catch for a second touchdown. Thetwo-point conversion failed, but West St. John widened the gap to acomfortable 34-12.
West St. John drove down the field right after halftime, Herbert making thelast yard, forcing his way up the middle for another touchdown. The two-point conversion again failed and the score moved up to 40-12, West St.
John.
With their next drive, Herbert made an impressive 70-yard run for yet another touchdown, this time Nicholson took the ball in himself for the two- point conversion.
Redeemer finally put a few more points on the board with a 15-yard touchdown run by the second string quarterback Patrick Sims. John Shortmade the two-point conversion and Redeemer changed the board to 48-20, with two minutes left in the game.
West St. John made the most of the next minute and half. Calvin Johnson ranthe ball 24-yards down to the opposition’s 29 yard-line.
The ball was pitched back on the next play to Initius Howard who swung right, zaged left and wove through the defense for the last touchdown. The two-point conversion by Derron Thomas was good and the score stood at 56-20.
