Defense paces Rebels

THIBODAUX – Riverside had its best defensive effort of the season, holding E.D. White to 138 yards in offense, in taking a 27-17 victory Friday night innon-district play.
Riverside improved to 6-0 overall. E. D. White fell to 4-2.Riverside gained 365 yards on offense, 238 coming on 41 rushing carries.
Jared St. Amant led the way with 89 yards and a touchdown on five carries.Damian Melancon added 58 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts. BrittWaguespack carried 14 times for 50 yards while Brandon Delaneuville had 25 yards on six attempts.
Melancon completed 9-of-18 passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns. Bothtouchdowns went to Gary Entremont who caught six passes for 98 yards.
E.D. White finished with 111 yards rushing on 36 carries. John Becnel had 63yards on 19 carries. Matt Matis had 11 carries for 44 yards. Matis alsocaught three passes for 20 yards. Evan Matherne completed 4-of-12 passesfor 27 yards.
Riverside got on the scoreboard first in the first quarter on a 40-yard pass from Melancon to Entremont. Blake Torres added the extra point to make it7-0.
E.D. White came back to take a 10-7 lead by the end of the quarter thanksto its special teams. On a fourth-and-12, Torres went back to punt and hadthe snap go over his head. Torres fell on the ball in the end zone for asafety, cutting the lead to 7-2.
On the ensuing free kick, Matis took Joel Levin’s kick at the Cardinal 35 and returned it 65 yards for the score. Matherne then found Colin Busson for thetwo-point conversion.Riverside regained the lead in the second quarter on St.Amant’s 71-yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good, leaving thescore 13-10. On the last play of the second quarter, Melancon connectedwith Entremont on a 7-yard scoring strike. Torres’ kick was good, making it20-10.
After a scoreless third quarter, Matis scored on a 12-yard run and Justin Verrett added the extra point to pull the Cardinals to within 20-17. But RayCella got his hand on a 13-yard punt by James Wilcox. The Rebels then wenton an eight-play, 60-yard drive, capped off by a 23-yard run by Melancon.
Sean Delaneuville stopped E.D. White’s final drive by intercepting Matherne atthe Rebels’ 18 and returning it 67 yards to the Cardinals’ 15 with 1:30 left.
