LUTCHER – The Lutcher Bulldogs rallied behind the leadership of their pitcher, Michelle Roussel, Monday to win the 3A bi-district playoff against St. Bernard, 9-0. Roussel pitched a one-hitter, striking out 11 against one more than the minimum batters. She also played tough at the plate, batting 3-4 with four RBI’s. Roussel held off St. Bernard allowing the single hit in the seventh inning with the last batter. Areal Bienemy drove the last pitch into centerfield, but was tagged out trying to stretch her run into a triple. “I was just playing every inning hard, making sure I didn’t give up any runs,” said Roussel. Lutcher made two runs in the first two innings before taking control of the game in the fifth. Four runs in the fifth, followed by three in the sixth gave Lutcher the win with the six run lead rule. “It was a great team effort,” said Lutcher coach Helen Funk. “Michelle did a great job for us, and we were able to put the ball in play and make some things happen. It was kind of frustrating early because we had opportunities. You just have to play through that,” she added. Lutcher will go on to play in the regionals against the winner of the Parkview Baptist/Albany game.
