Springtime is upon us and that can only mean one thing. It’s time to dust off those running shoes that are taking up space in the closet and head on over to St. Charles Catholic High School Sunday, April 8. The first “Run for the Son” 5K race and one mile fun run and walk will start and end at St. Charles Catholic High School. Pre-registration is $10, however after April 4, registration will be $12. Registration will last up until the start of the race. The one mile run and walk will begin at 8 a.m. and the 5K road race will begin at 8:30 a.m. Contestants are encouraged to arrive at the race site at least fifteen minutes before the scheduled race time to complete registration and receive race numbers. The registration fees will cover T-shirt, food, drinks and a chance for free business giveaways after the race. Winners will be chosen from each age group. At the end of the race, jambalaya, fried chicken and fruit will be served, along with water, Gatorade and soft drinks. Proceeds from “Run for the Son” will benefit the Fellowship of Christian Athletes’ annual summer trip to the national conference, which is held in Black Mountain, North Carolina and Bethany, La. “It is a real good organization,” commented St. Charles Catholic coach Gary Zeringue. At camp, athletes play sports during the day, attend clinics in the afternoon and go to assemblies at night. Some of the past keynote speakers at the national conference included: Florida State football coach Bobby Bowden; National Football League All-Pro Reggie White and Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach, Tony Dungy. Registration forms can be picked up at St. Charles Catholic High School, Sylvan Learning Center, Smoothie King, Jacob’s World Famous Andouille, State Farm Insurance (Mike Williams) and River Parishes Hospital-Sports Medicine Center.
