Rebels open with a pair of wins

The Rebels defeated Vandebilt Catholic, 154-167, Thursday afternoon at Belle Terre Country Club. The Terriers were one of just two teams to defeat the Rebels last season. Riverside was led by defending state champion Brett Bergeron who scrambled to an even-par 36. Michael Schoen was a shot behind with a one-over 37. Steve Luminais came in with a four-over 40 with Todd Lambert in at five-over 41. Mikey Lozano had a six-over 42. Vandebilt Catholic was led by Chad Whitney with a one-over 37. Brandon Henery had a five-over 41. Dustin Mire came in with an eight-over 44. Kevin Killian had a 45 and Whitney Weaver a 46. The Rebels shot a combined seven-over 151 to defeat host University by one shot at the LSU Golf Course Tuesday afternoon. St. Amant followed with a 162 while Ascension Catholic came in with a 193. Bergeron came in first in the individual competition with a two-under 34. University’s Paul Henslee was a hot behind in second. Schoen and University’s Travis Lejeune tied for third at two-over 38. Luminais shot a three-over 39 to tie University’s Brent Struthers and St. Amant’s Casey Clouatre for fifth. Lozano added a four-over 40 for the Rebels. Riverside hosts University Tuesday at Belle Terre at 3:30 p.m. CLASSIC RESCHEDULED – The Spring Junior Kick Off Classic, scheduled for this past weekend at Colonial Country Club, has been rescheduled for March 17-18.
