(Staff Photo by Michael Kiral) LUTCHER – Catcher Chris Guidry drove in the eventual winning run with a single in the bottom of the sixth and pitchers T.J. Bourgeois and Risley St. Germain held St. Charles Catholic to four hits as the Bulldogs took a 5-3 victory in the Toot Ganier Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon. Lutcher (4-3) lost to East Ascension, 8-6, in the tournament championship game Monday afternoon. St. Charles Catholic (4-3) had defeated Riverside, 9-1, earlier on Sunday as Jason Waguespack (2-0) held the Rebels to four hits and Toby Jacob and Randy Madere had two hits apiece. TheComets also defeated Mandeville Monday afternoon. Bourgeois (2-0) got the win for the Bulldogs, giving up three runs, two earned in six innings of work. He also struck out three while giving up four hits and walking one. St. Germain retired the side in order in the seventh, striking out two. “T.J. has been doing a good job for us,” Lutcher head coach Scott Tribble said. “I called him last night and let him know he was pitching. He was excited and he performed. He did a good job. We wanted to see Riz come in and close. He came in and did a good job.” Michael Bonura, who pitched the final 1 2/3 innings, took the loss. Bonura gave up three runs, all earned, on two hits and two walks while striking out three. Chris Cancienne pitched the first 4 1/3 innings, giving up two runs, both earned, on four hits and three walks while striking out one. The walks would prove to be the Comets undoing as four of Lutcher’s five runs came after a batter walked. “They tried to give us an out and we can’t throw a strike,” St. Charles Catholic head coach Paul Waguespack said. “But I’m happy with the weekend. We came out of the week winning two-of-three.” Trailing 3-2 heading into the bottom of the sixth, St. Germain led off with a to center off Bonura. After pinch runner Jordie Perilloux went to second on a wild pitch, Brignac and Matt Roussel walked to load the bases. Guidry then lined a single over the second base bag, scoring Perilloux and Brignac. Courtney Hines, running for Roussel, then went to third on an errant pickoff throw by Jeremy Triche and scored as Jonathan Lear flew out to left, making it 5-3. The game was scoreless going into the bottom of the fourth thanks to a double play turned by each team. Lutcher broke through for a run in the fourth as Keith Hymel led off with a walk against Cancienne. One out later, St. Germain slapped a single to left. After Craig Brignac flew out to left, Roussel lined a single to center, scoring Hymel from second for a 1-0 lead. St. Charles Catholic came back with a two-out rally in the top of the fifth against Bourgeois. Derrick Gaubert got it started with a flair over second base. Chris Poche walked and Triche beat out a chopper to short to load the bases. Mike Mustian then looped a single into short center, plating Gaubert and Poche and putting the Comets ahead 2-1. Lutcher tied the game in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Dustin Deslatte walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cory Bourgeois then lined a double inside the right field line as Deslatte came around to score. Waguespack led off the sixth by reaching second on a throwing error by Bourgeois. Waguespack then went to third as Brignac chased down Cancienne’s long fly ball to right and scored on a wild pitch, giving the Comets a 3-2 lead. Lutcher hosts the Bulldog Classic starting tomorrow while St. Charles Catholic competes in the Riverside Classic this weekend.
