(Staff Photo by Michael Kiral) LAPLACE – Northshore took advantage of four St. Charles Catholic errors to take a 4-1 victory over the Comets in the Comet Classic Saturday afternoon. St. Charles Catholic (6-11) came back to defeat cross-parish rival Riverside, 11-6, Sunday afternoon. The Comets had opened the tournament with a 7-1 loss to Holy Cross Friday. In Sunday’s game, the Comets jumped out to an 11-2 lead with three runs in the third and fifth innings and four in the sixth before holding off a four-run seventh-inning rally by the Rebels (11-6). Jason Waguespack picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season while D.J. Fortenberry (0-1) took the loss. Mike Mustian went 2-for-2 with three runs batted in for St. Charles Catholic. Chris Cancienne and Matt Boucvalt each went 2-for-3 with Boucvalt driving in a run. Jeremy Triche went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Sean Delaneuville hit a grand slam in the seventh for the Rebels. Against Holy Cross, Cancienne homered for the Comets. Mustian went 2-for-4. Michael Bonura (0-2) took the loss. St. Charles Catholic broke through for a run in the first inning in Saturday’s game. With one out, Chris Poche walked and went to second on Waguespack’s ground out to second. Toby Jacob came through with a two-out hit, lining a single to center to score Poche for a 1-0 lead. Northshore put runners on the corners with two outs in the bottom half of the inning before Comet starter Jeremy Catoire struck out D.J. Scharfenstein looking to end the inning. St. Charles Catholic put together another rally in the second as Andrew Revall singled to right and Justin Chauvin walked with one out. James Lusk made a diving catch of Derrick Gaubert’s sinking liner to center for the second out and Northshore starter Ryan Meyer got Mustian to ground out to second to end the inning. Northshore took the lead with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Daniel Rodriguez led off with a double to right. One out later, Gene Kleinschmidt reached second when his fly ball to right glanced off Revall’s glove as Rodriguez went to third. After Mooch Jaubert popped up to Triche behind the plate, Lusk beat out a bunt to third as Rodriguez scored to tie the game. Courtesy runner Jeff Sager then scored as Gaubert dropped Waguespack’s throw on Darren Hickman’s grounder to short. Lusk also came in as Gaubert’s throw to third skipped past the bag. St. Charles Catholic again threatened in the top of the third. Poche led off with a walk and went to second on Waguespack’s single to left. After a wild pitch moved both runners up, Jacob hit a fly ball to left. Hickman’s throw skipped past Kleinschmidt at the plate but Meyer, backing up the play, flipped the ball back to him to get Poche trying to score. Cancienne followed with an infield single to put runners at the corners but Meyer struck out Revall to end the inning. Scharfenstein singled to left and Rodriguez walked with one out in the Northshore half of the inning. Jeff Meyer followed with a single, scoring Scharfenstein to make it 4-1. Catoire got out of further trouble as Cancienne fielded Kleinschmidt’s grounder to third and threw out Rodriguez at the plate. Gaubert then grounded out to third to end the inning. Northshore threatened again in the fifth as Scharfenstein and Meyer singled and Kleinschmidt walked with one out. But Catoire got Jaubert to ground into a double play to short to end the threat. Triche walked with one out in the sixth with Travis Bourgeois then coming in to relieve Meyer. Bourgeois then retired both hitters he faced to end the inning. The game was then called due to the time limit. Meyer got the win for Northshore, giving up one earned run on five hits and five walks in 5 1/3 innings. Catoire (0-2) took the loss, allowing four runs, one earned, on eight hits and four walks while striking out three. In other action in the tournament, Riverside defeated Holy Cross, 8-1, Saturday, before falling to Northshore, 5-4, in nine innings Sunday. In the first game, Derrick Louque got the win to improve his record to 2-1 on the season. Britt Waguespack went 2-for-4 and drove in four runs. Bradley Hodges went 2-for-3 and Damian Melancon homered. Riverside scored two in the first and four in the second before adding single runs in the third and fifth innings.
