(Photo by Michael Gentry) DESTREHAN – The driving rain that pelted Destrehan Stadium during much of the first quarter did little to slow the deluge of points by the Fighting Wildcats offense against the F.A. Douglas High School defense. Scoring on their first four possessions, Destrehan rolled to a 28-point lead with 2:37 remaining to play in the quarter. Quarterback Daniel Luquet got the Wildcats off to a roaring start with a 38-yard strike to Fred Smith at 10:21 of the first quarter. Jonathon Scifres added the point after kick, his first of seven for the evening. On Douglas’ initial possession, Darius Vinnet picked off a Douglas pass and ran it in for another score, with 9:20 still showing on the clock. Less than four minutes later, Luquet again hooked up with Smith, to put the ball on the Douglas five yardline. DeChad Ward did the honors, barreling in for the T.D. on the ensuing play. Douglas continued to be unable to move the ball against Destrehan’s defense and was forced to punt for the third time. Craig Eugene fielded it at the Destrehan 47 yardline and returned it to the Douglas 25 yardline. Ward ran a slant to the eight, then followed with a sweep around the end for the touchdown. The point after by Scifres made the score 28-0 to round out the initial quarter. The rain slowed up in the second quarter, and so did the scoring. The out-manned Douglas Wildcats finally managed their initial first down with 2:50 left in the second. Destrehan added 10 more points on a 40-yard field goal by Scifres and a 5-yard plunge by second-string quarterback Demarko Hutchinson, as Destrehan began substituting freely, early in the second. The quarter ended with Destrehan leading 38n0. After a scoreless third quarter, Destrehan added six more points on a 9-yard run by Cedric White with 6 minutes left in the game. The extra point made the score 45n0. Eljay Sinceno wrapped things up in style for the DHS Wildcats, breaking a 61-yard scamper for the final touchdown with 44 ticks left on clock. Scifre tacked on his seventh extra point, ending the evening with 10 points, courtesy of his consistent accuracy. Destrehan’s defense contributed a pair of interceptions and two fumble recoveries, while holding Douglas scoreless throughout the evening.
