St. Charles Catholic based Cretin Homes beat Hannan based Allstate Insurance 8-4 Saturday to secure sole possession of first place in Second District Legion Baseball. The summer Comet’s nearly undid themselves in the seventh inning, when three errors and a handful of walks loaded the bases and gave Hannan a chance at bringing the game back. But a diving catch by centerfielder Jason Rauch and a double play later and the game was over. “We took care of business. We won,” said coach Paul Waguespack. Pitcher Mike Bonura took the Summer Comets into the seventh inning at the head of an 8-0 lead, having allowed only three hits up until that point. The Comets also had not committed an error to that point. But then the game flashed before their eyes. Errors, a single and a number of walks lead to Hannan scoring four runs in the top of the seventh. After the first error, coach Waguespack shouted from the dugout: “That’s how it begins!” PHOTO 2: Ryan Starr swings and misses a pitch by Mike Bonura during Cretin Homes’ victory over Allstate insurance Saturday. (Staff photo by J. Edmund Barnes) After the game, coach Waguespack explained: “You make one error, then you compound it into two. We didn’t make an error until the seventh inning.” Bonura (4-1) pitched until the seventh inning, when he was relieved by Jeremy Triche. Triche also lead the Summer Comets in hitting, going 2-2 with an RBI. Watching from the bleachers was Jeremy Triche and Jason Waguespack’s mothers. “The first six innings were pretty easy. The last inning was kind of tough. They just picked up where they left off (from the prep season)” said Edie Triche. As for the fetching and carrying that is a high school athletes mom’s bane, Edie Triche said: “It’s gotten a bit easier now that they have their drivers licenses.” PHOTO 3: Jer emy Triche scores while Hannan catcher Jimmy Badinger waits for the throw. She said that last Friday’s game against (Schaff Brother sponsered) Rummel was the most exciting to date. “The game kept going both ways. Everyone had his turn to bat.” As for where their son’s talent comes from, Patty Waguespack had one answer, to which Edie Triche heartily agreed. “All of their talent comes from their mothers.”
