EDGARD — West St. John split a pair of district contests this week,  earning a 4-3 victory over White Castle Monday but falling 10-0 to St. John-Plaquemine Tuesday.

Lavonta Augusta was the hero for the Rams against White Castle, bringing a big bat to the ballpark. Augusta went 3 for 4 and drove in all four runs to spur his Rams to victory. On the mound, Da’Jon Taylor had a solid day, earning the complete game victory. Malik Hutchenson went 3 for 4 at the plate as well.

“We match up pretty evenly with (White Castle),” West St. John coach Greg Joseph said.

“That game was going to come down to who makes the big mistake when it matters.

“Lavonta’s a guy who has all the tools. Sometimes he’s his own worst enemy, but he can swing the bat, and he showed that Monday with a big game.”

Against St. John-Plaquemine, Joseph said his team couldn’t avoid the big mistake he alluded to before, and a big inning followed as a result.

“We walked a few, and they get the hit where it hurts us most,” Joseph said. “We haven’t made the routine plays this year … We commit an error in the outfield with the bases loaded, and they follow with three more hits. When you play a good team like St. John-Plaquemine, that’s what they do. You can’t afford mistakes because they’ll punish you every single time.”

West St. John (3-8, 2-4) was scheduled to play East Iberville Thursday, but that game will be rescheduled.

The Rams return to action Monday when they will face visiting Ascension Catholic at 4 p.m.
