Dozens of red balloons will be released Wednesday from St. John the Baptist Parish. Each balloon will carry a message, a promise from students and administrators to fight drugs and violence in schools.

Students, their heads turned skyward, will join children around the nation to take a stand against drugs and violence. Red ribbons proclaim: “St. John Parish School Community takes a stand for a drug and violence free land.”

It is a week-long extravaganza dedicated to educating students on the dangers of drugs and violence. This year’s campaign will also focus on cultivating the “Six Pillars of Character” – trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship. Guest speakers, games, craft and writing projects are planned for local students. But students are not the only ones encouraged to participate. Coordinators asked for the support of the local government and school board, as well as for community and church participation.

School employees, government officials and law enforcement officers are invited to attend the opening ceremony at 9 a.m. at the School Board office in Reserve. Kick-off ceremonies will follow on local school campuses at 10 a.m.
