LAPLACE – If Tyrell Fenroy plays the rest of the season the way he did Friday night against Booker T. Washington High School, the St. Charles Catholic High School Comets football team will be very successful.

Fenroy’s four-touchdown performance led to a 45-14 thrashing of BTW in LaPlace. The Comets’ stand-out finished with 216 all-purpose yards. In addition, he returned two kickoffs for touchdowns.

Still, SCC head coach Frank Monica thought his team could have played better in the lopsided contest.

“We looked lethargic out there tonight. Booker T. played hard, but we were able to take advantage of a few mistakes,” Monica said.

The Comets scored on their first five possessions. Fenroy, a sophomore, got things going on a two-yard touchdown run to give the Comets a quick 6-0 lead. Thirty-six of the team’s 50 yards on the drive were accomplished on the ground.

After BTW punter Gregory Arnolie fumbled a snap, SCC capitalized when running back Cedric White ran it in from the one-yard line to put the Comets up by two touchdowns. SCC used up 1:30 on the clock on the three-play, 18-yard drive.

Against a withering rush, the Lions could not get anything started in the first quarter. After White scored, BTW fumbled the ensuing kickoff to give SCC a first down and 10 at the BTW 14-yard line. After that, all it took was a touchdown run by Shane Waite to put the home team up 18-0 with about four minutes left in the first quarter.

“Our special teams play is something that we take pride in,” Monica said.

The Comets continued to stick to the ground game during the second quarter. A seven-play, 46-yard drive was capped off when Fenroy scored his second touchdown, a one-yard TD run. All 46 yards on the drive were rushing.

Despite bad special teams play throughout the game, the Lions did have a bright spot in the second quarter. Aubrey Watson’s 85-yard kickoff return for a touchdown put points on the board for the New Orleans school.

However, the celebration for BTW did not last long. Fenroy’s third touchdown of the game came on an 80-yard kickoff return to begin the second half.

The fourth quarter saw Lions’ quarterback Brandon Thompson execute the biggest offensive play of the game for BTW. An 18-yard touchdown pass to senior David Webb closed the gap to 39-14 in favor of SCC.

The Comets’ defensive unit played well in the victory over a winless Booker T. Washington team.

BTW was held to minus 35 yards rushing and only 99 yards of total offense. The Lions faced third and long on several occasions during the game.

“I thought our defense played sporadically at times. We did some things positive and some things negative,” said Monica.

The next three weeks feature a trio of tough games and the stretch will be an important test for St. Charles Catholic. The Comets play E.D White, St. James and Donaldsonville, respectively.

“I don’t think we are ready to open up district just yet. We are not ready because we still need to focus on some things. It’s been tough with the weather we have been having lately,” Monica explained.
