Lutcher High School

LUTCHER – The Lutcher High School Bulldogs continued working toward a successful season-opening contest during Monday’s practice.

While focusing on several running and blocking plays, head coach Tim Detillier said he is most impressed with his team’s attitude on the field.

“It is right where it needs to be right now,” said Detillier.

The Bulldogs, who worked out in shoulder pads and shorts, have not had to worry about Mother Nature much during the last few days, which Detillier said can only help the team. However, one problem concerning the squad heading into Friday’s jamboree is the injury bug. Some players have been held out of practice due to injury.

“That is unfortunate because we are inexperienced at some positions,” Detillier explained. “I just hope our guys are ready when they get put into the fire.”

With no returning starters on defense, the Bulldogs need every practice they can get.

“I wish we could have two scrimmages and three jamboree’s,” the coach said.

According to Detillier, for LHS it boils down to “fundamentals and fundamentals.” The 11-year head coach concluded by saying if fundamentals are mastered during practice, then his team should be ready for the regular season.

St. Charles Catholic High School

LAPLACE – After a hot afternoon practice on Monday, several of the St. Charles Catholic High School Comets appeared lethargic and distracted.

“Our practices have not been very good lately. We have just made too many mistakes,” said head coach Frank Monica. “We need to have a better work ethic than this to succeed.”

The Comets are still not stable on some key positions, according to Monica. He said the installation of a solid game plan would solidify some positions. On Monday, Monica said he was worried about what the team would face Thursday in the River Parish Jamboree.

“Our guys have to worry about 11 West St. John players on both sides of the ball.”

Monica said he was impressed with the WSJ Rams.

“I felt like I was watching a tape on fast forward. I had to hit the pause button just to slow it down,” Monica said.

Hahnville High School

HAHNVILLE – Meanwhile, just off of Interstate 310, the Hahnville High School Tigers seemed to be taking a lighter approach Monday to Thursday’s jamboree game against St. James High School.

“It is to get a win, but it really doesn’t count,” said head coach Lou Valdin.

Monday’s practice was described by Valdin as the team’s first long practice. Organization is something Valdin is concerned about heading into the pre-season game.

“If we have no turnovers and don’t give up any cheap touchdowns, we will be OK,” Valdin said.

Like most teams, the steamy weather did not seem to bother the veteran Hahnville squad.

“We cannot control the weather. It is hot for everybody,” Valdin said.
