LAPLACE – Andrew Cupit, principal of St. Charles Catholic High School, announced Comets’ head basketball coach Philip Cavell has resigned from the school. Cavell did not state any specific reason for the resignation, but said he wanted to spend more time with his family.

“I feel it was time for a change,” said Cavell. “I am going to pursue other possibilities for my family and myself. I also look forward to spending more time with them as well. I want to be there for their future ones.”

Cupit commented that Mr. Cavell has been an asset both as a teacher and a coach.

Members of the St. Charles Catholic staff said finding a combination math teacher and basketball coach is difficult and Cavell would be missed just as much in the classroom as on the court.

Cavell compiled a 114-111 record in his seven years at the helm of the Comet basketball program, which has an overall record of 215-208. Cavell led his teams to four play-off trips at a school that had only been there once prior to his taking over. Last year’s team set a school record for wins with 24, which eclipsed the 1996-97 team which set the previous mark at 22. In 1996 Cavell was named the New Orleans Metro and River Parishes Coach Coach of the Year. Cavell stated that he is probably most proud of starting the Southeast Louisiana All-Catholic Tournament. St. Charles Catholic High School is still looking for a math teacher-coach to replace Cavell.
