St. Charles Council honors top scholars and educators

HAHNVILLE – Top scholars and educators will be honored Monday at the St. Charles Parish Council meeting, including the high schools’ valedictorians and salutatorians.
Valedictorians Ronald L. Schumann III of Destrehan High School and Hunter Sims of Hahnville High School are to be recognized, as are salutatorian Angela Graebert of Destrehan High School and Devin Naquin of Hahnville High School.
Schumann of Destrehan was a six-time Character Award nominee, served as a member of the National Honor Society, captain of the Quiz Bowl team and treasurer of the Honors Council.
He is a tour guide at Destrehan Plantation and for the City of New Orleans. He plans to attend the University of Alabama and pursue a career as a broadcast meteorologist.
Sims of Luling placed first overall in the State Literary Rally in English IV, served as a member of the Beta Club, National Honor Society, Science Olympiad and captain of the Quiz Bowl team.
He plans to attend Tulane University on a full scholarship and aims at a PhD in physics to become a university professor.
Graebert of Destrehan was a Peer Support Leader, involved in Fellowship of Christian Athletes, raised funds for the Junior Diabetes Association, Habitat for Humanity, American Heart Association, Make a Wish Foundation and St. Jude’s Research Hospital.
She served as the National Honor Society vice-president, participated in Literary Rally and was a member of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, National Honor Roll, Honors Council and is a Tulane/Audubon Scholar.
She plans to attend Nicholls State University on a full scholarship and pursue a degree in pre-med biology.
Naquin of Des Allemands is part of the New Orlenas Linux Users Group, a member of Beta Club, National Honor Society, Quiz Bowl team and Science Olympiad and placed second in the State Literary Rally for calculus.
He plans to attend Rice University and plans to become a college math professor.
Additionally, at Monday’s meeting, the parish council will recognize Barry Guillot of Harry Hurst Middle School, Jamie Treuting of Ethel Schoeffner Elementary School and Barbara Fuselier, principal of Hahnville High School.
Guillot, a resident of Luling, recently earned the Louisiana Urban Forestry Council’s Educator Award. Earlier, he has received the 2000 Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana educator the year, 2000-2001 Louisiana Association of Conservation Districts educator award and the 2001-2002 Louisiana Wildlife Federation’s teacher of the year award.
Four years ago, Guillot established the LaBranche Wetlands Watchers Service, educating middle-school students on water quality, soil quality, wildlife conservation and the values and challenges of Louisiana’s wetlands.
Treuting, a resident of Destrehan and instructor at Schoeffner, earned the National Presidential Award for Math, which she received in March. She also earned the 2002 Disney teacher of the year award, St. Charles Parish district and regional teacher of the year and Louisiana Math Teacher of the Year for 2003.
Fuselier, a resident of Luling, recently earned the 2003 Eductional Leader Award from the WDSU and Business Alliance of the University of New Orleans.
Since becoming HHS’s principal, she has implemented numerous positive changes, including the Informational Technology Program, Pro-Start Culinary Arts Program, Tiger Mart and a new Wellness Program is in development.
Also, in May 2001, Hahnville High was named one of the Top 100 Wired high schools in America by PC Magazine.
