Teens put the ‘s’ in ‘student-athlete’

Thirty-seven local student-athletes are performing well in the classroom as well as on the field.
Nine River Parishes high school volleyball players and 28 high school football players were recently named to the 2002 LHSAA Academic All-State Teams. To qualify for an All-Academic, All-State team, a student-athlete must have achieved a three-year cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and must have been selected for at least one All-District honor.
Additionally, each member school principal is allowed the opportunity of nominating at least two academically deserving individuals who did not receive All-District honors. The top 18 volleyball players will make up the composite squad, while others will be considered honorable mention.
Honorable mention for the All-State Volleyball Team, Division I-5A, included: Dufrene Hollin (Hahnville High School, 3.62 GPA) and Artrena Radcliffe (East St. John High School, 3.44 GPA). In Division III-3A, Lyndi Martin (Lutcher High School, 3.89 GPA), Heather Heltz (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.86 GPA) and Kelly Cupit (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.76 GPA) all were named members of the composite squad. Honorable mention included: Cary Roussel (Lutcher High School, 3.62 GPA), Ciji LeBlanc (Lutcher High School, 3.46 GPA), Jamie Duhe (Lutcher High School, 3.45 GPA), Amanda Helm (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.27 GPA) and Amanda Rebaldo (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.00 GPA).
In football, Scott Curry (Hahnville High School, 4.00 GPA), Adam Ayme (St. Charles Catholic High School, 4.00 GPA), Ashlon Albert (Lutcher High School, 4.00 GPA) and Scott Poirrier (Riverside Academy, 4.00 GPA) were all named to the Academic All-State Football Team Composite Offense. Class 5A honorable mention included: Deron Dumes (East St. John High School, 3.08 GPA), Lance Gerard (East St. John High School, 3.26 GPA), Derek Johnson (Hahnville High School, 3.02 GPA), Damon Pittman (East St. John High School, 3.12 GPA), and Alex Romero (Hahnville High School, 3.65 GPA) and Richard Perrilloux (East St. John High School, 3.16 GPA). In Class 3A, Donavan Bourgeois (Lutcher High School, 3.70 GPA), Randy Waguespack (Lutcher High School, 3.81 GPA), Michael Dicharry ( Lutcher High School, 3.63 GPA), Michael Scott (Lutcher High School, 3.79 GPA), Cody Martin (Lutcher High School, 3.64 GPA) and Blake Falgoust (St. James High School, 3.83 GPA) were all named to the 3A Academic All-State Football Team.
Class 3A honorable mention included LaMon Robinson (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.09 GPA), Jeremy Crose (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.40 GPA) Louis Malain (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.13 GPA), Cedric White (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.39 GPA), Chase Villeret (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.50 GPA), Chris Cancienne (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.63 GPA), Toby Luquette (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.14 GPA), Reid Owens (St. Charles Catholic High School, 3.67 GPA), Bryce Matherne (Lutcher High School, 3.37 GPA) and John Oubre ( St. James High School, 3.00 GPA).
Finally, in Class 2A, Ryan Tregle (Riverside Academy, 3.65 GPA), Dexter Falgoust (Riverside Academy, 3.80 GPA) and Jonathon Hendricks (Riverside Academy, 3.61 GPA).
LHSSA commisioner Tommy Henry said of the student-athletes, “We want all of the student-athletes in Louisiana to realize and understand that the educational foundation and values that they receive in our member schools will be lifelasting and will serve them long after their high school playing days are over.”
