St. John the Baptist Parish School Board has announced that LEAP summer school will begin May 31 and end on July 9.

The six-week summer school is available to those students who did not satisfactorily pass the English/language arts and/or math sections of the LEAP 21 test that was administered in March. Fourth and eighth grade students who do not pass both the English/language arts and math portions of the LEAP 21 test will not be allowed to advance to the next grade level.

This year, all fourth graders must score at the Basic Level in one section of the test and Approaching Basic in the other section in order to be promoted to the fifth grade. Eighth graders must only score at least Approaching Basic in both sections to be promoted.

The summer curriculum will include a number of teaching and technology programs in an effort to improve test deficiencies, and students will be retested July 6-9.

Classes will be held at each K-8 school site with the exception of Glade School, because of construction projects on that campus. Glade students will attend summer school at LaPlace Elementary.

Students will attend Mondays and Wednesdays for English and language arts and on Tuesday and Thursdays for math. Those needing both will attend all four days.

The school day begins at 8 a.m., with dismissal at 3 p.m. The school district will provide transportation to all students, along with lunch daily.

The district will also work with the parish government to administer its Summer Feeding Program and Recreation Program.

Fifth Ward Elementary and West St. John Elementary will host both programs on their campus.

Garyville/Mt. Airy Magnet will also host the feeding program and partner with the New Orleans Arch-diocese to host the Summer Witness Program.

“All of these programs helped to bring more students to summer school, and they helped to sustain attendance,” said Assistant Superintendent Wilbert Ocmond. “We’re glad about partnering with these programs again.”
