RESERVE – With Comeaux sporting a 27-0-1 record going in, Riverside Academy thought they might be in for a battle.
They were right.
Trailing 6-5 heading into the ninth inning, Comeaux put three runs on the board to claim an 8-7 come-from-behind victory.
Lacey Guidry threw all seven innings in the victory for Comeaux, while Megan Warner took the loss for the Lady Rebels.
One pitch changed the complexion of the game in the seventh inning. A lead-off homerun over the left field fence from catcher Lauren Pitre got things started for the Lady Spartans. With one out, Aimee Landry reached base on an error and scored on a double from Ashyton Walters.
After Katlyn Stanford flied out, Ashley Howard’s single scored Walters from second base. Her single made the score 8-6 Comeaux.
The Lady Rebels fought back in the bottom of the inning. After Holly Ocmand flied out, Kayla Poirrier singled and later scored on a double courtesy of Jenna St. Amant. Through the first couple of innings, both pitchers had been throwing well.
Warner did not give up any runs while allowing only two hits. On the other hand, Guidry did not allow a hit and only allowed two base runners.
Comeaux jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. With two outs, shortstop Karli Hubbard walked and then scored on a double from Lauren Pitre. Warner left Pitre stranded at second base when she struck out Kayla Romero to end the top of the third.
Riverside put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third to grab a 2-1 lead. While sending eight batters to the plate, the Lady Rebels managed two runs on three hits in the third. Two consecutive singles by Brittany Kelly and Lisa Lambert put runners at first and second with no outs. A fielders choice by Meggie Martin scored Lambert, while a single from Warner plated Daphne Zimmer, who had reached base on a walk.
Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Rebels fought back to grab a 6-5 lead going into the seventh inning. Kayla Poirrier singled and quickly advanced to third on back-to-back singles by St. Amant and Webb. A passed ball allowed Poirrier to score from third base. The big blow in the inning was a double from Martin, which scored two more Lady Rebel runs.
