Here is the 2003-2004 All-L’Observateur “Dream Team” for boys basketball.

Two new awards will be handed out this year: Freshman of the Year and Game of the Year.

Most Outstanding Player – Demond Carter (Reserve Christian)

Coach of the Year – Mike McNamara (Lutcher)

Freshman of the Year – Trenton Marshall (Lutcher)

Game of the Year – East St. John at Lutcher (January 16, 2004)

It was another good year for boys basketball here in the River Parishes. Like the girls, the boys were very deep at the guard position.

West St. John guard Josh Lumar was perhaps the main reason the Rams made it to the quarterfinals this year, losing to University. He averaged more than 15 points per game while having 7.8 assists. He also led his team to a 23-win season. In a playoff game against Jewel Sumner, Lumar had six steals in one half.

Like Lumar, Reserve Christian guard Demond Carter makes it to the All-L’Observateur team for the second year in a row. Carter is considered to be one of the top players in the nation. The sophomore averaged over 23 points per game, including a 46 point performance against Ellender in a 111-99 victory earlier this year.

At center, West St. John’s Neal Songy quietly had a productive year. After starting the season in a backup role, Songy worked his way into the starting lineup and averaged 15 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Lutcher Freshman Trenton Marshall had the best Freshman year of any player in the River Parishes since, well, Demond Carter. See team page 7
