RESERVE – Not even a 5A team from the always talented New Orleans Catholic League appears to have the stuff to slow down the potent Reserve Christian boys basketball team.
On Monday night the Eagles hosted Shaw in a contest that was billed the biggest game of the season.
And even though the Eagles certainly gave Reserve Christian their best game of the season, the talent of coach Timmy Byrd’s team again was obvious in an 87-64 victory.
The win keeps the Eagles unbeaten for the year, now at 9-0 on the season.
“No doubt they were the toughest team we’ve faced,” Byrd agreed. “But our kids really played some great defense and we handled their press very well.”
Shaw came out and seemed determined to contain top Eagle guns Demond “Tweetie” Carter and Kevin Branch.
And they did an effective job of that in the first quarter, holding that pair to only three points combined.
But the Eagles again showed the balance on their team as Tino Brozos stepped up with his long range sharpshooting, tossing in 12 first period points to take up the slack.
The result saw RCA up by 20-11 in the first quarter. From there the Eagles only built their lead to 16 by early in the third quarter and were never seriously threatened the rest of the way.
“I liked the way the other guys stepped up, especially Brozos,” Byrd noted. “And Justin Porter also gave us another big game. Overall I thought we did a real good job against a very good team.”
Brozos finished the game with 20 points, while Carter got it going to finish with 27 and Branch added 18. Also chipping in was Porter with seven and Demetruis Akseherogion with 11.
Porter also had eight blocked shots and 10 rebounds.
Reserve Christian won a game last Friday night at Gables, taking that contest 92-65.
Carter led the way in that win with 28 points, while Branch had an awesome all-around game with 26 points, 10 rebounds, nine blocks, six steals and five assists.
Brozos added 11 in that game, while Akseherogion scored nine and freshman Ronnie Ray scored seven.
Reserve Christian returns to action Thursday of this week in the East Iberville Tournament.
