BAKER – An unbeaten season start by the East St. John boys basketball team ran into a roadblock in the Baker Tournament here this past week.

The Wildcats had won their first game of the season in impressive fashion, but they ran into some tough competition in the Baker Tournament as they managed only one victory in three games.

In the first game of the tournament East St. John lost to Tara, 67-59, then after winning their second tournament game over Broadmoor, the Wildcats lost to Scotlandville 78-68 to finish action in the tournament.

“We did pretty well overall even though we lost two of the three,” head coach Charles Julian said. “But I think we needed to be a little more aggressive and that is what cost us.”

In the opening game against Tara High, the Wildcats were actually ahead 45-44 heading into the fourth quarter, but lost out as they were outscored, 23-14.

Cazaro Young scored 17 and Willie Lego had 14 to lead the team in that contest.

In the final game against Scotlandville, the Wildcats again put up a good fight, only trailing by three going into the fourth quarter. But once again they were not able to take charge of the game in going down to defeat.

Young had 20 points and Ricardo Porter scored 19 to lead the way in this one.

No statistics were available for the game against Broadmoor.

The Wildcats are hosting their own tournament through Wednesday of this week, then take the Thanksgiving holiday off before returning to action in the St. Amant tournament on Dec. 2-4.
