LAPLACE — St. Charles Catholic won the District 10-3A title with a unblemished 4-0 record and it has a solid 8-2 record overall this season.

What thanks does it get for its achievements?

A date with an extremely talented Patterson High School team Friday night at the Comets field.

The Lumberjacks of Patterson sport an identical 8-2 overall record, and they bring an offensive attack with them to Friday’s playoff opener that can clearly put points on the board in a hurry.

“Patterson is really fast and very explosive,” St. Charles Catholic head coach Frank Monica said. “They have a very powerful offense, a great quarterback and some very good receivers. This is a very tough draw. It’s the kind of match-up you would expect to see in the quarterfinals, not the opening round.”

Monica said as skilled as the Lumberjacks are, it’s their team speed that has his attention the most.

“We don’t match their speed,” he said. “We’re going to have to keep them in front of us and try to contain them, because if they get behind us, I don’t know that we’ll be able to catch them.”

Although they have an impressive aerial assault, Monica said Patterson can run the ball quite effectively, too.

The Lumberjacks will certainly have their work cut out trying to stop the St. Charles running attack as well.

Tyrell Fenroy has led the Comets’ ground assault all season, and in Friday’s district-clinching victory against Lutcher, he ran wild once again. The St. Charles standout ran for 192 yards and had three touchdowns to help his squad post a 33-14 victory.

Comets quarterback Jesse Martin has had a stellar season as well, and he threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns in the win last week.

Kickoff for Friday’s showdown with Patterson is set for 7 p.m. at the St. Charles field.
