St. James bowls over D’ville, 42-8

ST. JAMES – The St. James Wildcats bowled over Donaldsonville’s Tigers 42-8 in a home game Friday night.
Wildcat Jason Zenon set the game tempo racing 89 yards on the opening kickoff, giving his team a 7-0 lead with 13 seconds elapsed on the game clock. Following an interception, the Wildcats drove down the field and went up 14-0 with 6:04 left in the quarter.
By game’s end St. James had amassed 326 yards rushing, including 153 on 15 carries by Tremain Dapremont. Zenon added 34 yards on eight carries and scored another TD. Lutcher Ambrose racked up 78 yards on six carries. The scores came on 5-yard, 3-yard, 27-yard and three-yard runs.
The Wildcats gained only 15 yards passing the entire game. Sophomore quarterback Antonio Phillips threw two passes, including an interception. But, he was effective running quarterback keepers, and scored a 1-yard touchdown.
The Wildcats added another touchdown with 6:59 remaining in the half, but Donaldsonville threatened to make a game of it on Demond Chatman’s 28- yard TD with 4:03 left remaining and a successfull 2-point conversion run by Roy Sam. With the score 21-8, the Wildcats recovered a Tiger fumbled around their own 45 yard line and made a determined effort to punch it in. But Donaldsonville’s Reshide Knockum intercepted a deflected Phillips pass in the end zone as the half ended.
The Wildcats built up 28-8 lead on Dapremont’s one-yard TD with 3:58 left in the third quarter.
Donaldsonville took over on their own 26 after the kickoff, and a Wildcat penalty gave them ball at the 50-yard line. After Donaldsonville was forced to punt the Wildcats took over on their 9-yard line.
Five minutes and ten plays, the Wildcats scored with 7:16 left in the game, for a 35-8 lead. Lutcher Ambrose capped the 91-yard drive with a one-yard TD up the middle.
The Widlcats last score came at the 1:40 mark with Zenon picking up a couple of first downs running and then taking it in from one -yard out making it 42-8.
The Wildcat’s Denell Dumas intercepted a Donaldsonville desperation pass at the St. James 39 yard line with 34 seconds remaining and end scoring for the night.
The game was well attended, with around 300 visitors from Donaldsonville and a nearly packed stand on the St.James side of the field.
