Another quality performance on the hill results in a win for the Comets

LAPLACE-Monday afternoon, Bell Office had some bad duck.

That duck was Cretin Homes right-hander Steven “Duck” Duhe.

The Comet pitcher picked up the complete-game victory over the East Jefferson based squad in an 8-1 win at Comet Field.

Wasting no time, the Comets pushed across a single run in the first inning on an RBI single from second baseman James Callahan.

The lead ballooned to 4-0 an inning later. After a one-out single by designated player Matt Walters and a double from Jonathan Cancienne, Walters would score on a sacrifice fly by Kyle Olasin.

All-everything outfielder Casey Robottom picked up the big hit of the inning, launching a monstrous two-run homer over the left-field wall to give Cretin Homes a 4-0 lead.

“I was really sitting on the curve ball,” Robottom said. “He had thrown me a couple that I had not swung at so I was looking for it at the very beginning.

“He (Bell Office pitcher Zach Bordelon) hung one and I just hit it hard.”

The long ball would be put to use again only an inning later for the Comets.

After Callahan led off the frame with a single, he stole second base. When Phillip Sutton reached on an error, the Comets had runners on the corners.

B.J. Cancienne made quick work of the runners, lining a pitch over the right center-field wall to all but put the game out of reach at 7-0.

“It was a fastball,” Cancienne said. “And I was looking curve ball because we picked up their signals.

“I was thinking curve, but he threw me a fastball and I just stayed fighting and drove the ball.”

While the Comet bats erupted for 10 hits, it was Duhe’s performance on the mound that was the story of the game.

Duhe allowed only one run on five scattered hits while striking out five.

“My curve ball was really working,” Duhe said. “I was just trying to hit my spots and I was able to do that out there today. It was nothing more than that. They (Bell Office) were just out in front on a lot of pitches.

“I was not really surprised that I was able to go all seven. I have been able to pitch deep into games all season.”

Cretin Homes Head Coach Paul Waguespack was happy to come away with yet another victory.

“Every game is a big game,” Waguespack said. “This win gets us to 7-1 in the district and we feel like 10 wins gets us into the playoffs and that is our goal. That was our goal from the first moment we set foot out here.

“If we are going to make the playoffs, we have got to get to 10 wins. That assures us a birth, but we know that we definitely have a tough road ahead. It does not get easy.”

Waguespack continues to be impressed with the performances that he is getting on the mound.

“Other than the first game of the year I don’t think that there has been a game that we haven’t been happy with the performance that we have gotten on the mound,” Waguespack said. “We have really gotten some quality starts from our entire pitching staff.”

Defeating arch-rival Imperial Sugars this past weekend, 4-3, the Comets now stand 9-1 overall and 7-1 in district play.

“We are hitting the baseball,” Waguespack said. “We are putting the ball in play. It seems to have just clicked for us. I’m excited about what this team can do.

“If we continue to play well, we have the chance to really finish the summer with a special season.”
