EDGARD – St. John the Baptist Parish Courthouse in Edgard celebrated Law Day event on May 6 to remind students the importance of law in Louisiana and to celebrate freedom.

The Judicial Offices of the 40th Judicial District Court hosted the event featuring an oral history of Louisiana by Judges Madeline Jasmine, Mary Becnel and Sterling Snowdy, a mock legislative session and legal jeopardy.

Select students from East St. John, West St. John and Reserve Christian schools participated by writing essays about certain laws and creating banners about freedom.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower established Law Day to strengthen America’s heritage of liberty, justice and equality under the law. May 1 was then designated as the official Law Day in the United States.

The day is devoted to educating the public about the law, legal system and the role American citizens play in a democratic society, according to information provided by St. John the Baptist Parish Courthouse in Edgard.
