Defense wins championships.

No one is comparing St. Charles Catholic’s girls to the famed “Steel Curtain” but if they continue to play the type of defense they have been playing as of late, they will be a very tough team to deal with down the stretch.

Behind a combined 32 points from Rynique Perkins and Mary Clement, the Lady Comets defeated Lutcher 63-42 to secure their first victory in district play.

“It was very close at halftime,” SCC head coach Erin Remondet said. “We were at a standstill offensively. We just could not get anything going. Switching to the man-to-man on the defensive side really got us going. Then we turned that into a full-court press and we were really rolling.

“Our press really gave them trouble and that started things going for us on the offensive side of the ball. It got us a lot of easy baskets. We made another switch when we put Rynique at the high post and that created some additional things for us offensively.”

With non-district play over, Remondet said she looks forward to her team’s stretch run towards hopefully a district title.

“The game against St. James is definitely one of our biggest games,” Remondet said. “They knocked us out of the playoff race last year. District play really gets rolling for us.”

After taking on the Lady Wildcats last night, St. Charles Catholic will play their final non-district game of the regular season when they travel to River Ridge tonight to take on John Curtis. The junior varsity game is set to start at 5:00 pm with the varsity match-up to follow immediately after.
