SCC RB Jonathan Cancienne goes for 216 yards

RESERVE – If the parking situation at Riverside last Friday night was any indication, the Rebel/Comet prep football rivalry is as alive as ever.

With fans ringing all the way around the Rebel’s home football field, St. Charles pulled out the victory in this year’s meeting between the two 2A teams in St. John Parish, after going ahead late in the game on a touchdown run by Jonathan Cancienne to make it 24-7, which would go on to be the final some four minutes later.

&#8220You’ve got to give credit to all these kids,” said SCC coach Frank Monica. &#8220They really brought it for this game on both sides of the ball. It always makes for a good game.”

But the Rebels didn’t go quietly. Riverside took the first lead in the game on a TD run from running back Jarid Casear in the second quarter, capping a drive that was set up by a pass from quarterback Wade Laiche to Jade Falgoust down to the one-yard line. With the extra point By Brian Raubenolt, it was 7-0.

St. Charles evened it up for halftime with a drive deep into Rebel territory for a six-yard pass to Chase Fletcher from Philip Sutton.

That brought it to 7-7 for the third quarter where the Rebels came up with a turnover after Riverside’s Thad Lewis made an acrobatic interception in Comet territory after the ball was tipped by a grounded Comet receiver. The Rebel offense got the ball all the way inside the ten-yard line before SCC’s Kyle Faucheux picked off a pass at the goal line. After that, the Comets used a heavy dose of Cancienne runs to take the possession down to the Riverside one-yard line where senior Matt Walter punched it in for a 14-7 lead after the kick by Chris Ilski.

Ilski added to that lead with a 38-yard field goal through gusty winds early on in the fourth quarter to give the Comets a 17-7 advantage. Laiche, who threw eight completions covering 82 yards in the game, led Riverside on their next possession. But the Rebels eventually turned the ball back over to the Comets, who scored the final points of the game
