The Riverside football squad returned home Friday night with a 2-0 record after a road trip to play the Newman Greenies where the Rebels took command early, but were tested on their way to a 25-14 win.
“It’s one of those games where it’s a little scary at halftime because we probably should have been up by four touchdowns, but we weren’t,” Coach Mickey Roussel said in post-game comments. “But we established the line of scrimmage again in the second half and played pretty much a complete game tonight.”
Jarid Caesar highlighted the Rebel offensive line with a number of big plays, the biggest being an 85-yard dash after a direct snap in the second quarter. Caesar finished with 31 carries for 221 yards.
Quarterback Wade Laiche got things started in the first, directing the offense to a 65-yard touchdown drive that included a 32-yard pass and three runs by Laiche, the last into the end zone.
Caesar got his first TD of the game on the Rebels next possession after taking nine of eleven snaps and picking up 46 yards.
The Greenies kept it interesting with an interception return that set up a tip drill touchdown for a 19-7 score going into halftime.
But Riverside came back out strong and used a Jade Falgoust interception to set up a 7-yard touchdown run by Caesar to make it 25-7.
Newman put up their last points on a pass that the receiver turned upfield for a 46-yard touchdown which made it the 25-14 final.
