Rivals St. Charles and Riverside are set meet Thursday on the Comet’s diamond in the first of three scheduled district games pitting two of the best baseball teams in district 2A.
The last meeting between the two teams took place a week and a half ago in a Riverside tournament, where the teams tied three times before the Comets jumped in front with a sixth-inning splurge after the Rebels walked a handful of base-runners. SCC’s Matt Heltz was a major contributor in the game, as he went 3-of-4 with a home run and 5 RBIs. Riverside is led by LSU signee Lee Haydel who was an all-district selection last season.
The two teams are ranked as the best in 2A by the Louisiana Baseball Coaches Association. Last year the Rebels made it to the semi-finals of the playoffs while the Comets were bounced in the regional round when they were in district 3A.
The Rebels have compiled a record of 12-4 so far this season while St. Charles stands at 9-5.
