RESERVE – Riverside is off to a great start in district play as they took it to rival 2A school St. James on the diamond on Tuesday with a 14-0 win over the Wildcats.
The Rebels are odds on favorites to be among high school baseball’s elite after getting through 10 games so far this season while giving up only one loss. St. James meanwhile fell to 3-3 on the year.
The game opened slowly in Riverside’s favor as the Rebs posted one in the first inning and three more in the second. With Jonathan Giroir on the mound shutting down the Wildcats in the batter’s box, the Riverside offense blew the game open with a 10-run third inning that put St. James in a must score situation going into the fourth inning. The Wildcats were unable to put a dent into the lead and the game was ended in the fifth when the 10-run rule took effect.
Giroir picked up the win to go to 4-0 in games up to now. Keith Guidry led the Rebs with a homer while Chase Emerson and Calvin Richardson each picked up a hit when it still mattered early on.
The Rebels are scheduled to see another in-district rival this week when they take on St. Charles on Thursday.
