Lady Bulldogs still in contention

The Bulldogs and the Rebels had little fight left in them Friday night after Lutcher traveled to take on DeLaSalle and Riverside headed into St. James. LHS girls’ squad lost their first game in district this season to fall out of first place with just more than a week to go before the playoffs begin. The Riverside boys’ team took on a St. James team that had defeated them earlier in the season, and had trouble on both sides of the court all during the game to finish with a 106-22 loss.

The Lady Bulldogs had an opportunity to leave DeLaSalle with a win after exchanging the lead throughout the first half, but a third quarter run by DeLaSalle gave them a lead that LHS couldn’t manage to overcome in the final period. Despite the loss, the Lady Bulldogs are still in contention as they go to 16-9 on the season and 1-1 in the shrunken 10-3A district. They can regain some of that ground when they play a doubleheader this week against Sacred Heart, though all three of the teams are garanteed a playoff spot due to non-participation of schools still recovering from the flooding in the New Orleans area.

The boys squad stayed competetive throughout their game, but was unable to overcome a seven point defecit that DeLaSalle had built up during the first half. Despite a fourth quarter push, Lutcher fell 47-36 and went to 6-18 on the season and 1-3 in district. they next face St. James and East Jefferson this week in district.

Riverside’s squads have also had a tough time as of late, with the boys out of playoff contention and falling for the second time to St. James. This game again found them out-matched and short on depth as the Wildcats held the Rebels to single digits in every quarter on their way to a 106-22 victory. The loss drops Riverside to 5-19, 0-5 while St. James holds first in district with a 19-6, 4-0 season record.

Riverside gets back into district play this week when they hit the road to take on John Curtis this Friday. Curtis girls squad is currently in first place in 10-2A.
