LAPLACE– St. Charles boys basketball is right at the top of a competitive district 10-2A this season behind the play of seniors Andrew Coleman, Casey Robottom and Michael Troglen with a 66-61 win over Donaldsonville Tuesday night. The Lady Comets also played host to Donaldsonville on Tuesday, but dropped the match to go 0-2 on the week after falling to St. James last Friday.
In the boys featured district match-up, the Comets traded blows with the Tigers throughout the entire game, though SCC consistently held a slight lead.
The third quarter began with a jumper by junior John Bonura which led to a run for St. Charles, pulling the Comets ahead 42-33 going in to the final period. Donaldsonville began to creep back, pulling to within six early in the final period, but Robottom sank a three-pointer with 5:18 remaining to get back on top by nine points.
The Tigers threatened several more times off of baskets by James Ingram and Marcel Myles which made it 64-59 with under a minute left. But a pair of clutch free throws by Kyle Olasin stretched the Comet lead far enough for the eventual win by a score of 66-61.
The win puts the Comets at 12-8 for the season with a 1-0 district record. They are scheduled to return to their home court on Tuesday against the 5-16 Lutcher Bulldogs.
The Lady Comets didn’t fare as well on Tuesday, as they dropped their second district game of the week which moves them to 1-2 in district and 11-10 overall. They return to action late next week when they host Riverside, whom they took their only district win against so far, in a 6 p.m. tip-off.
