RESERVE — A Garyville man died late Thursday night in a two-vehicle accident on Airline Highway near Marathon Refinery in Reserve.

Robert V. Johnson Jr., 18, of Garyville, was northbound in a 1992 Chevrolet Camero, traveling at a high rate of speed in the right lane, according to Louisiana State Police Troop B.

At about 10:25 p.m., Jeffery D. Herdon, 38, of Camdon, Ark., driving a Peterbilt tractor-trailer, also traveling northbound, was attempting to make a left turn onto Marathon Avenue.

While the truck attempted to turn, it was struck on the driver’s side by the Camero. Johnson was pronounced dead on the scene and three unidentified passengers were transported to area hospitals in critical but stable conditions. No one in the Camero had been wearing seat belts, Trooper First Class Karla Billiot reported.

Herdon was not injured and alcohol and drugs are not suspected as contributing to the crash.
