LUTCHER – In a lopsided Friday the 13th girl’s varsity match up, the Lady Bulldogs played near perfection as they trounced on the girls from Reserve Christian 68-52.
The Bulldogs came out aggressive early, forcing defensive turnovers on nearly every possession. Scoring mostly on fast breaks from turnovers, Lutcher took an 8-2 lead with 6 minutes to play in the first and never looked back.
Randi Donald led her team in scoring with 23 points in the win as she ran the floor and seemed to score virtually at will. She capped off the first quarter with another fast break lay-up to extend Lutcher’s lead to 23-9.
Lutcher started the second quarter off just like the previous as with relentless defense and by capitalizing on turnovers. Donald drained a three-pointer with nearly six minutes left in the quarter to extend Lutcher’s lead to 28-15.
Reserve Christian Head Coach Kevin branch was animated on the sideline throughout the entire game as he tried to coax his girls to put some emotion on the court, but the Bulldogs had their number on this particular night.
Lutcher took a 43-22 lead going into the second half as the Eagles continued to struggle finding the basket. They didn’t fare much better in the second half.
Lutcher started the second half off a little cold but settled in fast as their constant double teams and crisp passing led them to a 50-24 lead with just over 3 minutes to play in the third.
The pace slowed quite a bit for the second half as Lutcher was easily in control leading by 20 points or more nearly the entire game. Reserve Christian’s Jenay Morris led all scorers with 30 in the losing effort.
An impressive performance by the Bulldogs was no fluke according the coach Debbie Perkins.
“We played at a high skill level which I knew we could,” Perkins said. “Tonight the girls got the full understanding that they can score high and they don’t have to be a mediocre team.”
