St. James Coach Rick Gaille was concerned about a let down performance after the Wildcats’ thrilling victory over then-No. 1 John Curtis last Friday. Turns out, Gaille had nothing at all to worry about.

The Wildcats ran the ball early and often on the road at Kentwood Friday night, piling up 300 yards on the ground en route to a 42-14 victory.

Luther Ambrose led St. James (8-2, 4-0) with 90 yards and two touchdowns on eight carries. Kenny Zenon added 73 yards on 10 carries, and Gary Davis ran seven times for 49 yards and two scores.

Kentwood (7-3) had no answer for a Wildcats’ team that has now won seven straight games entering the postseason.

“These kids enjoy playing the game too much to have a letdown,” Gaille said. “This is a great foundation to build on going into the playoffs.”

St. James is seeded second in the state, and will host Livonia in the bi-district round.

Davis put St. James ahead 7-0 after a six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Ambrose followed that with a three-yard touchdown of his own to make it 14-0 after one quarter.

Davis scored his second touchdown, this time a 10-yarder, to put St. James ahead 21-0 in the second quarter. Again, Ambrose followed Davis’s act, scoring from six-yards away. It was 28-0 at the half.

Juarelle Narcisse and Jaleel Steib each scored in the second half to help put the score out of reach.
