St. Charles Catholic emerged from this past weekend’s Brothers of the Sacred Heart tournament with a win and two losses, after defeating St. Martin’s 1-0 but falling to St. Paul’s 1-0 and Brother Martin 3-1.

The losses were St. Charles’ first two of the season. The Comets (3-2, 1-0) entered the weekend 2-0.

Peter Lambert Oswald scored the game-winning goal over St. Martin on Friday. Nick Woodroof scored the team’s lone goal on Saturday morning against Brother Martin.

“We’re a little rusty right now,” said St. Charles Coach Rick Woodroof, of his team that is starting to get the players that were committed to the Comets playoff run in football. “We have a good team here. But we do have some work to do.”

The Comets defeated Grace King 4-1 last Wednesday for their second win of the season. The scoring was balanced as John Abatte, Chris Ilski, Oswald and Woodroof each scored goals in the victory.

Coach Woodroof says that his team, which advanced to the regional round of the postseason in the 2006-07 season, should be able to improve on that feat this year.

“I think we should be even better this year,” Woodroof said. “I expect this team to do really well.”
