Comets, Lubin take district titles

The St. Charles girls’ cross country team won District 9-3A on Thursday at the River Parishes Invitational, while Comets’ runner Reyna Lubin won an individual district crown for the second straight season at the event.
Lubin ran a time of 21:57 to outpace all other runners in the district.
“It’s not a shock in any way,” said St. Charles Coach Matt Monica of Lubin’s performance. “She practices the same way that she runs in these events.”
“I’m very proud of her, and I know her teammates feel the same way.”
East Ascension won the overall race on the boys side, edging out Dutchtown by five points, 29 to 34. Hahnville placed third with 105, and East St. John paced fourth with 109 points.
On the girls’ side, Dutchtown took the crown, downing East Ascension 41 to 57. St. Amant finished third with 91 points, St. Charles finished fourth with 93 points and Lutcher finished fifth with 112.
Dutchtown’s Dyllon Truax ran the fastest time at the event, placing first among boys with a 16:55 time, getting by second place Alex Braud of Dutchtown and capturing the District 6-5A crown.
Other notable local boys’ finishers included – Hahnville’s Tyler Hebert, sixth with a 17:53; Lutcher’s Jordan Duhon, 11th, taking District 9-3A with a time of 18:18; St. Charles’ Chris Graugnard, 12th, 18:18; Hahnville’s Vanderbil Jackson, 13th, 18:23; East St. John’s Travis James, 15th, 18:32; ESJ’s Baishawn Pratt, 16th, 18:33; ESJ’s Michael Watson, 18th, 18:49; and ESJ’s Charmer Pratt, 19th, 18:52.
Dutchtown’s Katie Quinn took the win in the race and in District 6-5A for the girls, with a time of 20:08. Hahnville’s Kanisha Taylor finished second with a time of 20:46.
Other notable local girls’ finishers included – Lubin, 6th with a 21:57; ESJ’s Dawn Brooks, 7th, 22:08; Lutcher’s Kristin Whitlow, 8th, 23:38; SCC’s Erica Blank, 14th, 24:03; Lutcher’s Whitney Martin, 15th, 24:08.
East St. John Coach Paul Dupuy was pleased with his team’s performance, and has high hopes that the team will improve again entering the state meet on Nov. 13.
“Overall, I knew it would be a tough district,” Dupuy said. “We were hoping that the times to be a little better, but I expect that we’ll run better next week.”
