With no opponent scheduled for this week, Lutcher concluded its regular season in style on Friday night – by clinching the District 9-3A crown.
That’s because Lutcher finished district play undefeated, winning on the road at Plaquemine, 47-23.
And at least one aspect of that surprised Lutcher coach Tim Detillier.
“We didn’t know going in, this is the first time in all of Lutcher’s history that the school has won three straight district titles,” Detillier said. “Lutcher’s won a bunch back to back, but never three in a row. We made a little history there.”
Dexter McCoil had four interceptions and Jarvis Landry caught nine passes for 158 yards and three touchdowns to pace the Bulldogs (8-1, 4-0)
Marche Michael caught five passes for 115 yards. Blaine Gauthier went 14-of-22 for 248 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 73 yards on 12 carries and two touchdowns. Daniel Taylor ran eight times for 126 yards and a touchdown.
Terrance White and Austin Roussel led the defense with 10 and eight tackles respectively.
Plaquemine (2-7, 2-1) scored on its opening possession on an 18-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Travis to Justin Russ, making it 7-v0.
But on Lutcher’s first possession, Gauthier answered by finding Landry for a 4-yard score, tying the game.
From there, the Bulldogs rolled.
A 3-yard Gauthier touchdown made it 13-7. An 8-yard Daniel Taylor touchdown run put the Bulldogs ahead 21-7. Finally, Gauthier found Michael with 39 seconds left in the half to put Lutcher ahead 27-7 at halftime.
No. 4 ranked Lutcher now awaits i8ts playoff seeding, and is expected to host its first round game.
“If you had told me we’d be 8-1 at this point, I’d be tickled pink,” Detillier said. “I just thought we needed to have some early success. The players sensed the expectations on this program and stepped up to the task.”
