LAPLACE – The St. John Sheriff’s Office is spreading a little Mother’s Day cheer and taking down a few irresponsible fathers in the process.
In conjunction with the St. John District Attorney’s Office and the Thibodaux Support Enforcement Services, the St. John Sheriff’s Office initiated its “Mother’s Day Roundup,” a large-scale operation to bring in fathers – and a couple mothers – who avoid their child support payments as much as they avoid their children.
Each person arrested in the roundup will stay locked up until the money they owe is paid in full in the form of bonds set by Judge Mary Hotard Becnel, with all payments going directly to their children.
The operation, which began Thursday, will continue past the weekend until all 29 of the Sheriff’s Office’s most wanted parents are brought in or until police exhaust all their leads.
“I called the warden and asked for space for 30. Until they come up with the bond they’ll be staying at the Jones Motel,” Sheriff Wayne Jones said.
The Sheriff’s Office captured 11 of the 29 most notorious parents in the parish from 4:30 a.m. until 10 a.m. on Thursday morning, including Timothy Rising, the worst offender who reportedly accumulated a $61,606.27 debt by avoiding all his child support payments since 1992.
Other parishes throughout the state initiated roundups at the same time, in an attempt to remind mothers and fathers that they are under a legal obligation to pay child support, according to Assistant District Attorney Kim Ancona-Laborde.
“The St. John District Attorney’s Office, Thibodaux Support Enforcement Services and the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office want the public to know that deadbeat parents will not be tolerated as there will be additional roundups in the future,” she said.
Sheriff Wayne Jones said the suspects often give false addresses and can be difficult to locate and therefore requests that anyone with information call either the Sheriff’s Office at 652-9513, St. John Police Dispatch at 652-6338 or the Louisiana Child Support Customer Service Center at 652-9430.
“We’re going to get all 30 of them,” Jones said. “There’s 1000s of dollars owed by these individuals.”
Chief DA Investigator Maj. David Lazano hopes parents not included in the Sheriff’s Office “Mother’s Day Roundup” will come forward and pay their child support dues.
The state of Louisiana collected a total of $3,307,922.85 in child support for St. John Parish as of March 30, 2007, but $13,282,561.88 was still owed at that time.
