LAPLACE -The LaPlace Rotary Club is currently soliciting nominations for its annual awards, given to a teenager and a top area citizen.
The District 6840 Club will hand out the “Stephanie Wilking Outstanding Teen” and a “Citizen of the Year” award at its annual banquet and awards dinner each summer.
The “Outstanding Teen” honor seeks to recognize a local youth for top education and moral achievement in the community, and is named in honor of the LaPlace teen who began the national “Kids for Cops” organization years ago, which helped raise money to purchase bulletproof vests for the St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office. Wilking later died of spinal meningitis.
Anyone with possible nominations may e-mail those names to kchiri@bellsouth.net, or call Rotary President Beverly Harris at 536-1106.
Deadline for nominations is April 30.
